Engagements Engagements Engagements! (Part 2)

Welcome to part two of our engagement photo session round up! Last week we had four couples, and this week we have four more. Two from the Boston commons, one from around the Boston waterfront area, and one from Borderland State park.

For Greg and Lauren’s engagement session we headed over to the ICA waterfront area instead of going to the Boston commons. The back stairs at the ICA with it’s ocean and Boston views makes it a great location for engagement photos. Both Greg and Lauren live in New York, and did a semi-destination wedding in Brewster on the beach in mid-July at the Ocean Edge Resort and will be posted in the near future.

Nate and Lynsey’s engagement photos were also shot in the commons in late October. The weird part about this past fall was how late the leaves started to change colors, so here you’ll see a lot of golden and green leaves, as well as some golden light as we shot towards the middle to end of the day. They were such an easy going couple we can’t wait to photograph their wedding this 2012 season!

We’re out of the commons for the next session with Michael and Leigh down in Essex, Massachusetts at Boarderland State Park. We did a tour through the park in early November which has all sorts of great places to shoot including a lake, several gorgeous trails, random cabins, and a Frisbee golf course! Their wedding is in 2012 as well, so their wedding blog post won’t be up for several months either.

And our last post is, you guessed it, in the Boston Commons! Natalie and Joe’s engagement photos were also done in early November and we not only went through the side of the commons with the bridge, but the other side closer to the Lowe’s cinema and Beacon Hill area as well. Thanks to all our couples for being so easy to work with and we can’t wait to get shooting this upcoming 2012 season!

Engagements Engagements Engagements! (Part 1)

Over the course of the past few months we’ve shot quite a few engagement sessions. I posted one a few weeks ago and after going through and pulling images from the rest of the engagement sessions we’ve shot I have decided to just make two larger posts instead of several smaller posts. We have shot quite a bit of engagement photos in the Boston Common’s, but it is interesting how the season, weather, and time of day can really change the way the photos come out!

The first couple, Matt and Cassidy, met up with me earlier in the summer in Cohasset on one of the boat docks where the groom’s family docks their boat. Matt and Cassidy’s families both have summer homes in Cohasset where the couple originally met. We still have not blogged their wedding from the Atlantica, also located in Cohasset, but will be posting about them in the next few weeks!

Our next couple’s engagement session was was done in mid to late fall starting at the couple’s home (with their adorably fuzzy cat) looking out over the Boston Common and then continuted into the Boston Common below their apartment. Cory and Lisa’s wedding is not until 2012, so look out for their wedding blog post in the Berkshires later this summer!

Lindsey and Jim’s engagement photos also started in the Boston Common, but instead of sticking around there, we took a stroll over to the Charles river where they indulged in some ice cream cones and sun. We shot their wedding in association with Sage Studio in Manchester, NH. Lindsey and Jim’s wedding was in October out in Lenox, Ma, and will be blogged in the next few weeks as well.

And our last set of photos on this post is another Boston common’s engagement session! Lauren and Matt’s wedding was held out in California and we were only hired to shoot their engagement session so there will be no future post about this couple. But check out their stroll through the commons, then through the Beacon Hill area close by. Also check out the metal ducks in the commons with Bruin’s jerseys due to the Bruin’s being in the playoffs at the time. Josina & Bongani’s June 25th, 2011 Wedding in the Woods

Today’s blog post is from a wedding we shot back in June at Essex Conference Center and Retreat in Essex, Massachusetts. The ceremony and reception were all at the Conference Center and most of the guests were able to stay on site as the couple rented out the whole conference center for the weekend. They picked their wedding venue based on it’s beautiful location, serene atmosphere, and the fact that they were able to rent the venue for the entire weekend. They had a rehearsal dinner the night before, then friends helped them get the place decorated and ready for the wedding on Saturday and were able to have bonfires Friday and Saturday night. They both love Northern Massachusetts and wanted to have their wedding geographically close to the ocean but have the wedding itself in the woods. It was pouring rain the whole morning and cleared up about 3 hours before the ceremony was due to start.

Josina and Bongani both live in the Boston area, but Bongani is originally from Swaziland and all of his six siblings came to the United States for the first time to celebrate with them! Since Josina is Jewish and Bongani is Christian, they had an interfaith ceremony officiated by Rabbi Judy Epstein. Some of the Jewish elements of the wedding were the breaking of the glass by Bongani and the signing and reading of the Ketubah, a Jewish marriage certificate and Bongani’s sister did a reading from the bible to incorporate Christianity into the ceremony. They were married under a Huppah, a Jewish structure made traditionally of tree branches and a simple white cloth, made for them by Josina’s brother and his wife. The morning of the wedding they assembled the Huppah with a team of about 6 people.

Much of this wedding was very DIY with contributions from both friends and family. Bongani’s sister made the table runners and brought them over from Swaziland. They are made from traditional African fabic called Shwe Shwe. During the ceremony Josina’s father and Bongani’s oldest sister lit a unity candle brought from Swaziland. Instead of a DJ, Bongani spent over 80 hours putting together a playlist that would mix together American and African music that kept the crowd dancing all night. Even after the music was turned off almost half the guests stuck around and sang and danced together for another half hour or so after the reception was over to traditional Swazi music. The wedding party (and even the Rabbi!) danced out during the recessional to a famous South African wedding song. CD’s with all their favorite songs from their wedding playlist were put together as party favors. Their close friend Sophia Barrett made all their cupcakes and cakes for the wedding and her sister Louisa made the invitations, programs, and table numbers. Instead of having a guest book, they made wedding mad-libs for their guests to make it a little more fun. Since they didn’t have a DJ, the bride’s sister and law was the MC for the night, with help from her husband and their little one.

Thanks to everyone who made this day possible as it really was a team effort from all the guests as well as the venue’s staff. And thank you to my talented second shooter, Molly Geiger, for doing an amazing job!

Brett & Jessica’s 1929 Ford Model A / Barn Engagement Session

Hello and welcome to our new blog design that is directly integrated with the rest of the Shane Godfrey Photography website! For our first post with our new design we have Brett & Jessica’s engagement session from this past September. I met Brett and Jessica through Jessica’s best friend that I happened to know from college. She had been following our work on facebook and referred me to them back in June to shoot their upcoming wedding in September of 2012. We instantly clicked and they more or less booked us on the spot!

Both Brett and Jessica were excited for their engagement session and spent several weeks trying to find a barn that we could shoot at in the area. We wound up at Gould Barn in Topsfield which was open to the public as long as there were no meetings going on at the time. The best part about their engagement session, aside from Brett & Jessica being incredibly easy to photograph, was the original Ford Model A from 1929 that Jessica’s dad brought over from New Zealand with him when he moved to the states in the 80′s. He had it refurbished roughly 10 years ago and is an amazing car to see in person; it looks brand new! They were extremely happy with all their photographs and used them for both their wedding website and invitations. Kati & Ben’s Austrian June 4th, 2011 Cemetery Wedding

I finally have had some time to sit down and write up a few more blog posts! Today’s wedding is from June 4th, 2011. The Ceremony was at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Watertown and the Reception was at the Harvard Club in Cambridge. Both the Bride & the Groom live in Watertown, which is where the groom got ready with is family and groomsmen, and the bride got ready at the Harvard Club in Cambridge. One quick story about one of Ben’s groomsmen, was the day before the wedding all the groomsmen went out on a bike ride through the city together, and he fell on his face. Every time they told the story he laughed about it and thought it was hilarious that he will now have all these nice pictures with his face all bloodied. Now, I have to say, this is one of the most involved (and fun!) weddings I have ever been part of. First off, there were so many people flying in from all over the world, the bride and groom decided to give each party of guests traveling to Boston a cotton tote bag they had printed with yellow quatrefoil design of the wedding with maps, a Florida orange, an Austrian treat, a Boston Dig & Phoenix, and water. I started the day with the bride while my second shooter, Dan Aguirre, was with the guys. A few things about the brides attire include the veil, which was made by the bride with a vintage hair comb and tulle that she found with her parents on a trip they went on to New York City. Her vintage dress was made by Lisa Dezmelyck (a local dressmaker), re-imagined with far less details and poof than the original. The groom had cuff links that his mother had made for him from an artist in Geneva. The design is a traditional indigenous male/female symbol akin to yin and yang.

We then headed over to the church at Mt. Auburn Cemetery and immediately jumped into the ceremony, which was completely in German! The groom’s and his family’s first language is German, and Kati was more than happy to jump and learn the vows in another language. A few special things they did with/at the ceremony include the porcelain flower vases on the back of chairs were made by Kati, Ben, Nancy (the bride’s mother), Hugh (the bride’s father), Summer (the Maid of Honor), Tiffany (a Bridemaid), and Marty (the brother in Law). The texture on the vases were pressed into the porcelain with family textiles made by Kati’s great aunts. Kati’s mother, with the help of local friends in Cambridge, helped to attach the ribbon, fill them with flowers, and hang them in the chapel. The ceremony programs were designed by the bride and groom and the ribbons were tied on as a joint effort between Kati and her mother. The Zombie ringbearer pillow was made by Kati’s mother from a family handkerchief and inside there was placed a zombie made by an artist from Washington D.C. (sent by one of Kati’s colleagues who also loves zombies). Her nephew, the ringbearer, loved the idea of being a zombie ringbearer, and surprised him with a mini zombie that held the rings during the ceremony. The flower pins are an Austrian tradition, friends from Cambridge (UK) helped to put these flower pins together the weekend before the wedding at their pre-wedding make-stravaganza, as then called it. The marriage certificate was made by Kati and Ben from a Martha Stewart design. They actually took a letterpress class at Bow and Arrow Press at Harvard University and combined letterpress with linoblock printing for the design. It looked absolutely amazing. The bagpipes were present for Kati’s grandfather who is from Scotland. Their family all love the bagpipes as well, so it was a representative of Kati’s culture. At the end of the ceremony, their MC for the day jumped out into the isle and starting singing with the crowd with a song provided in the ceremony program.

After the ceremony, everyone headed outside of the church for about an hour of refreshments and hor’ devours catered by one of my favorite places in the city, Sofra! I then took Kati and Ben around Mt. Auburn cemetery and got a ton of great photographs of them together. There were so many great spots, it was hard to not get stuck there shooting all day! While we were photographing, Dan went on one of the three tours of the gravestones and tombs given by Kati and Ben’s guests. Laura and Jenny (Kati’s old roommates) led a literary and arts tour. Nick Green, Ben’s first American friend, led a tour to Washington Tower to see the Boston Skyline. And Luke Mander led a botanical tour of the cemetery. The bride and groom then hopped into my car and we drove over to the reception where the first thing they had to do was saw a log in half! This is an Austrian tradition and it worked out to be great fun for both Kati & Ben, and their guests. There were two other games played later in the night, one of which involved Kati sitting in a chair behind Ben with a sheet over him with a “business suit” drawn on it. She then slipped her hands through the sheet to act as Ben’s hands. She then tried to “get Ben ready for work” while blind to what was going on. She tried to shave Ben’s face, feed Ben breakfast, and brush Ben’s teeth among other things. This proved to be even more hilarious than the first game of the day. There was one last game where 8 people sat in a line of chairs and pulled their pants (or dress) up to their knees. Ben then had to get on his hands and knees and was aloud to feel each person from the ankle to the knee to try to find his bride while both Kati and Ben were blindfolded. It took him a while, but he did find her! They were then presented with traditional custom made Austrian boots, which represented them walking through life together.

Some other things about the reception include the seating cards which a few local friends of Kati helped her fold. They were cranes cut with a piece of paper inserted in them for each guest’s name and table number. She also wrote all of the names and seat placements by hand. The table building silhouettes were made by the Best Man (Beaudry) and cousins from Austria with Ben at the crafting make-stravaganza. They were all Boston based locations for all of the travelers to the wedding. The end of the night gifts were Forget -Me-Not seeds in small matchbooks that we made from a Martha Stewart template. They translated it into German and changed the color palette. Friends helped to fold and fill seed envelopes. The caketopper was Kati’s grandparent’s cake topper at their wedding. Evan Metter, their close friend, was their Master of Ceremony. He did the crab and lobster song as well as help keep the flow of the evening going. Pierre Hurel was the Jazz musician who played two songs on the piano at the cocktail hour for the bride and groom. He was an exquisite pianist, I couldn’t believe how talented this man was. Nicole Agois Hurel was their second MC and Music Coordinator for the night. And Ben’s cousins from Austria designed all the Austrian games played at the reception. All told, they had about 65 guests from other parts of the country, as well as 30 local friends. The guests came from Austria, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Florida, Oregon, New York, Chicago, Georgia, and Maryland.

I really can’t say enough about how great this wedding was. It really stands out to me as one of the most involved days, both with Kati and Ben’s effort as well as their family and friends, to make this a truly special experience for everyone who attended.

Heidi & Jimmy’s May Wedding at the Codman Estate

We’ve been swamped with weddings the whole month of June but I finally got the opportunity to sit down and pull images from Heidi & Jimmy’s wedding at the Codman Estate in Lincoln, Massachusetts, about 20-30 minutes outside of Boston. My last post was Heidi & Jimmy’s engagement session which was a ton of fun, and their wedding wasn’t much different! I arrived at their house in the early afternoon to find Heidi already in her dress, all ready to go! Her and Jimmy were both getting ready at their house as they wanted to keep their day casual and fun for themselves as well as their guests. We did do a first look before leaving the house for the wedding, but Jimmy got so excited to see his bride that he sprinted from the backyard, up the stairs, and into Heidi’s arms before she emerged from their house! That really set the tone for the day, as you can see in each and every picture how in love and how much fun these two have together.

We got the majority of the photographs done before the Ceremony started, which was great because we had almost a full hour to wander around the Codman Estate’s gorgeous grounds as well as the farm next to it. We followed that up with pictures of the bridal party before heading over to the ceremony site which is set up under a ton of tree cover which helped keep the temperature down in the hot sun. They even had bug spray that matched their wedding colors set up for their guests (and me!) to use throughout the night. There isn’t too much to say about the ceremony that isn’t in the photographs, but they did pack a box with wine and love letters among other things, for a romantic night down the line where they could sit and remember their wedding day and how special it was together.

Heidi and Jimmy’s backyard Engagement Session

I want to share a little set of images from an Engagement session I did with Heidi and Jimmy last weekend in their backyard. They are big gardeners and love the outdoors, so they thought it would be perfect if I went to their house near Walden Pond and photographed them in their favorite place to be. They also had the cutest 9 month old golden retriever, Daphne, who provided constant laughs for all of us. I can’t wait to shoot their wedding on the 28th, also near Walden pond. Amanda and Greg’s Wedding in the Mountains

Two weekends ago I had the pleasure of shooting at the Steele Hill Resort in Sanbornton, New Hampshire. The best part about this wedding was that I already knew more than half the guests, on account of me shooting Greg’s sister’s wedding last season! It was great seeing Nicole and Tim again (Greg’s sister and husband) as well as the rest of the family.

Now I must warn you, before going to view the images from this wedding, there are far too many pictures of two of the cutest flower girls I have ever encountered. That being said, Amanda and Greg were a great couple to photograph. They were full of energy and you can see how much they love each other in almost every picture from their day. We started in Amanda’s room, with the getting ready photos, and then moved right into the ceremony part of the day. The ceremony site has an amazing view of the lakes region of New Hampshire, as well as an almost full 360 view of mountains around the grounds itself. The couple and wedding party were a great bunch and were game to take as many fun pictures as we could fit into the time we had. I then took the bride and groom around the grounds for a short while before returning back to the Carriage house at Steele Hill, which was recently renovated and has extremely tall ceilings with exposed beams inside. It actually reminded me a lot of many of the homes I shot last summer for Yankee Barn Homes.

Amanda and Greg also had one of the coolest center pieces I’ve encountered as well. Greg works for a wine company, so they bottled their own wine and had a bottle in the center of each table which were later given away to one lucky guest who happened to have a wine bottle cork in the back of their chair. They also were kind enough to let me have a bottle! Not only did they have their own wine bottled, but they also had their cake topper custom made to look like the bottles they made for the wedding. Anastasiya & Anton’s Wedding – Part 3

The final post from Anastasiya & Anton’s wedding is a series of bride and groom and reception images. Seeing as how we were at the always beautiful Butternut Farm Golf Club (I have another wedding there later this season), we hopped into some golf carts and made our way around the grounds. Our first stop was a small covered bridge with some beautiful landscaping behind it. The day was timed perfectly to get outside right as the sun was setting which allowed us to make some fun images of the couple dancing under a willow tree as well as kissing through the bride’s vale. We then headed into the reception where all the bridal party danced their way into the reception hall and stood around the dance floor as the couple had their first dance together. After that there were a few toasts, games, and the flower girls came out in traditional Russian costumes to present Anton’s parents with Karavai (a type of sweet bread). After dinner, Anastasiya changed into a second dress and her and Anton preformed a well practiced and beautiful tango for the guests. It was a great way to get the crowd excited and roll right into more dancing. I had a great time photographing this unique wedding and I love that by photographing weddings, I get to experience and learn about different culture’s traditions almost every weekend

Anastasiya & Anton’s Wedding – Part 2

The second part of Anastasiya and Anton’s wedding post is a collection of images from Minuteman National Park in Concord, Ma. We went there after the girls all got ready in the morning and we took a bunch of gorgeous portraits of all the ladies in the wedding. After that we went back to Butternut Farm Golf Club for the Ceremony and Reception, of which the Ceremony is posted below. During the Ceremony they did a few unique things as every couple does. They had a suitcase filled with things that would remind them of their day and why they loved each other on their wedding day. The second thing they did was release doves. This was actually the first wedding I have ever been to in which the couple released doves, and it’s a really fun way to put a little excitement and interactivity into a ceremony especially for the guests. In the next few days I will be posting the last of Anastasiya and Anton’s wedding, which will include the bride and groom pictures as well as many pictures from their Carnival themed reception. Anastasiya & Anton’s Wedding Part 1

Alright folks! Finally had some time to pull the first set of images from Anastasiya and Anton’s July 2010 wedding! Today will just be the getting ready part of the day for the bride. In the morning Anastasiya, her bridesmaids, and junior bridesmaids, were all at the Salon getting their hair and make-up done, followed up with getting dressed at a hotel location a few miles from the Salon. The wedding was carnival themed, as was Anastasiya’s dress, gloves, and mask (see below). I will be posting a complete vendor list on the final posting about their wedding, but for now enjoy the beginning of what turned out to be an incredible day!

New Years Photo Extravaganza – Final Post (a month late ;-)

I’ve had the remainder of this wedding sitting on my desktop since the last time I posted but we’ve been real busy over here gearing up for the 2011 wedding season! We’ve even got a few booked up for 2012 already!

Anyways, this is the last post from Michael’s and Bruno’s wedding in Milton. This set of images is some of the bride and groom as well as the reception hall at the Milton Country Club. They had a fun woodsy cake with two wood toppers. The reception hall itself was outdoor themed as to keep with the style of their ceremony. Some of the unique things they had at the reception were a candy bar, a typewriter for their guests to write them a letter to the couple, and a tree and leaf stamp guest book (see below).

New Years Photo Extravaganza Day 3!

Today I will be covering photographs from Michael and Bruno’s wedding from the cocktail hour and a few of the creative portraits I take of all the bridal party while doing the more formal photographs. A lot of things I liked about their cocktail hour was they had a no bar, just champaign, wine, and I believe beer as well as fresh lemon-aid and fruit. The brides brother gave a great speech towards the end of the cocktail hour and the groomsmen played a song for the bride which Bruno helped write with his friends a few years prior. Come Monday I will finally be posting the bride and groom pictures as well as some details from the reception site!

New Years Photo Extravaganza Day 2!

Today’s post from Michael’s and Bruno’s wedding is the ceremony portion of the day. They did a few untraditional things that I enjoyed and felt like helped the couple connect to their guests. It also didn’t hurt that they got married at an incredible botanist’s estate in Milton, Massachusetts, filled with rustic style barns, greenhouses, fountains, and even roosters! Many of the flower arrangements and podium were DIY and to navigate through the estate they laid out a path with yellow stones that you will see throughout the images below.

Michael and Bruno decided they were going to meet before hand which is not entirely untraditional, but I’d say only 1 in 4 weddings do the bride and groom meet before hand. Three of Bruno’s groomsmen were musicians who played over the course of them walking through the estate up to the reception site. It was a great way to build anticipation for the guests as well as make it fun for everyone! They also had a ton of speakers, ranging from friends from college, to family members, and childhood friends from Brazil. Each speaker said something about love or commitment curated by Michael and Bruno of course. It gave the guests (and myself) great insight into their thoughts on love, and their commitment to each other.

It was a great experience shooting their ceremony, it was probably one of my favorites from the year! I love when the couple infuses their personalities within the wedding itself. New Year Wedding Photo Extravaganza!

So maybe my overzealous title is a bit much, but over the course of the next few months I will be posting a wide range of different weddings from the past year. This week, I will be posting a wedding I shot back in late August in multiple parts. I shot this wedding by myself at a venue in Milton that has not yet been released to the public. But, for the first day’s images I will be posting the getting ready photographs up until the ceremony. Look out for the ceremony shots in the next day or two followed by the Bride and Groom and Reception photographs. Matt and Diana’s Cambridge Engagement Session

A few weeks ago I took Matt and Diana out around the Harvard square area for their engagement session. First, we took their English Pointer, Fenway, down to a local park to get a few pictures together and then did a loop from Inman Square in Cambridge around Harvard Square and down to the Charles river. Matt and Diana were a ton of fun! They really want to get an autumn look to their pictures so we did our best to find foliage and leaf piles on our shoot. We came out with some great stuff and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding next year! Thanks guys!

Mary Alice & George’s Wedding In Harvard Square

Labor day weekend is always one of the biggest wedding weekends of the season. This year was no different, with Mary Alice and George’s Cambridge wedding starting in Harvard Square at the Charles Hotel for the girls and Central Square at the Le Meridien for the guys. We then headed over to Central Square at the Saint Mary Orthodox Church for the ceremony at and ending up at Upstairs on the Square in Harvard square for the reception. The great part about Upstairs on the Square is that it is so close to a lot of unique shooting locations (my favorite kind of venue) so we wondered into Harvard Yard for a little while, took a walk through Harvard square and we got a bunch of great pictures. George was also excited because they rented an old Speedster that he drove from the Ceremony to the Reception. The best part is that my second shooter and I hopped on his Vespa and rode next to them while they drove from Central to Harvard. We had a great time and we want to thank Mary Alice and George for being so much fun and making our job easy!

Meredith and Scott’s Marina Bay Wedding

Back in July I shot Meredith and Scott’s wedding down in Boston’s Marina Bay. They both got ready at the Park Plaza hotel in Boston where I took the guys for a quick walk through the city to the Hancock tower for a few pictures before heading over to Marina Bay for the remainder of the day. Supposedly this is the last year they are doing weddings there, which is unfortunate on account of it being such beautiful spot. You get a full view of the Boston skyline as well as the ocean view with all the local’s boats! Meredith and Scott were very fun and open which made my job a breeze. Jason and Marissa’s Boston Engagement Shoot

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Jason and Marissa’s engagement photos around the downtown Boston and Beacon Hill area. They are getting married next summer and wanted Engagement photos for their wedding site and invitations. They are having a Boston wedding so we figured it would be the perfect spot for an Engagement session! Check out the images below!
